The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of ginseng saponin fraction on the-activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase, and malondaldehyde(MDA) portent in the liver of post-irradiated mice. Male mice were treated red ginseng fraction(5mg/Kg/day; i.p) for 10 days before whole-body gamma irradiation(5SGy, 6OCo). In the ginseng saponin treated and irradiated mice, the activities of SOD(16%) and catalase(9%) were increased, but MDA level(30%) which is the product of lipid peroxidation was decreased at 20 days, compared to non-treated ginseng saponin and irradiated mice. The enhanced activities of SOD and r-malice inhibited the increase of MDA product resulted from the ionizing radiation. These results suggest that ginseng saponin fraction probably play on scavenger against free radicals and radio protective effect.
